Remodeling our basement, thinkin about a Saniflo or other system. Just wondering what others have found?
What do you think about this proposition/investment?
i currently live in a rental property owned by my father.i pay half of the normal rent.he is actually breaking even and not making a profit cause he is out 600.00 a month.so today he told me a proposition he had for me.i would move back into my parents house and live in there basement(fully finished with a bedroom and a living room) and he would give me 100.00 a week and i wouldnt have to pay any rent.that will help me get my finances in order.then in 6-12 months he would put the down payment on a house for me (60,000..we live in long island ny) and put it in my name with him as the co signer.the house would be a high ranch so i would have one floor and rent out the other floor.so with the other persons rent and my rent it will pay off the mortgage payment for the month.then eventually he will take his name off the house and it will be mine.im almost 29 and i would never be able to afford a house here on my own because the cheapest houses here are a little under 300,000.00 .the only people that live in my parents house is them and i would have privacy.they dont bother me at all and i am very close to them.i guess the only issue is that even though i have privacy my parents (my mom especially) are olf fashion italians off the boat and wouldnt agree with my bf sleeping in the same bed as me(he is in the military and is stationed in a different state).i brought that up to my dad and he said well you lived with your x and you went on vacations with guys so its a little late(for the sex talk lol) i guess i just wanted to know your opinion on this.PLEASE MATURE ANSWERS ONLY!!!!
I need to file a complaint about unethical building inspector/Buildings Dept. for Town of Hempstead(Nassau,NY)?
I do not know where to go from here or who to contact but basically I am looking for a way to file a complaint against the Buildings Dept./Building Inspectors for the “Town of Hempstead Buildings Dept” in Long Island, NY.
To try to make a VERY LONG STORY as short as possible here is a summary: NINE MONTHS AGO I called and made a complaint to the buildings dept. about an illegal basement apartment which was GREATLY AFFECTING MY LIFE (I lived on another supposedly LEGAL floor of this house, the landlord was a SLUMLORD and had this illegal basement apartment he was renting to HIGHLY UNDESIRABLE PEOPLE, I was paying almost $2000 a month rent to live on a supposedly LEGAL FIRST FLOOR (unaware of the illegal basement when I moved in) and this illegal basement rental caused MANY PROBLEMS in my life (they had their electric and gas illegally hooked up to my meters-which was investigated by LIPA and Keyspan and finally resolved after a few months), there were NUMEROUS plumbing problems due to TOO MANY bathrooms and people hooked up to the same plumbing (when they used their plumbing sometimes water would come out of my shower or faucet, their dryer exhaust would blow into my clean clothes in my dryer-EVERYTHING WAS RIGGED UP AND HOOKED UP ILLEGALLY), I had NO ACCESS TO MY ELECTRIC PANEL and would HAVE MANY ELECTRIC PROBLEMS-even have them mess with my hot water heater settings and electric panel and I would not be able to correct the situation due to no access to their illegal basement rental.
Since the landlord was a COMPLETE SLUMLORD and my life was miserable due to this illegal rental, I had no choice but to report it to the buildings inspector, hoping they would force him to shut down this illegal rental. Over the course of the next several months, I followed up SEVERAL TIMES asking on the progress of this report and when they were coming to RESOLVE THIS ISSUE and give the landlord a citation/violation and it took FOUR MONTHS from my original complant before the building inspector even came out to the house. When she did, of course the basement tenants did not answer the door so she left a violation notice on the door saying she needed access to the basement but she ASSURED ME THIS WAS AN ILLEGAL RENTAL and she knew that people lived down there (there was a mailbox for APARTMENT THREE right at their side door-which she said should have been MY SIDE DOOR for my first floor apartment) and now they had their own electric and gas meters (three meters on a supposedly two family house). Anyway, a few more months passed and I kept following up and then finally she came out again and posted a VIOLATION NOTICE ON THE DOOR. Long story short is that I wound up going to court with my landlord when I stopped paying rent after so many months of living in misery, thinking I WOULD WIN, but in the long run, I ENDED UP HAVING TO MOVE OUT because the whole place was most liklely illegal (according to the lawyers in court) and the landlord refused to remedy the situation, THE ILLEGAL RENTERS STILL LIVE THERE and during a recent argument with the landlord when moving out and my saying that he will PAY EVENTUALLY FOR BEING A SLUMLORD AND HAVING AN ILLEGAL APARTMENT, he said “I have a CO (certificate of occupancy) for the basement and the building inspectors are “in my pocket”-whatever that means-he obviously has FRIENDS in the buildings department, BUT HE DOES NOT HAVE A CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY, I researched it and it is only a legal two family if the owner occupies the home (mother/daughter) which he DOES NOT. I lost TONS OF MONEY living in this place, I had paid a realtors fee when I moved in, I spent thousands on rent and lived in misery the whole time, now I recently moved and it bothers me GREATLY that the basment tenants still live there, the landlord does not seem to have had to comply or pay any fines or make this place LEGAL and every time I call the buildings dept. I basically get the run around-NINE MONTHS since my original complaint and I want to now file a complant against the buildings dept for NOT DOING THEIR JOB, this is ridiculous and I want actions to be taken against the landlord and the friends he has in the buildings dept. Who do I file a complaint with? I also have TONS OF PAPERWORK regarding all my complaints, phone calls, letters from LIPA, KEYSPAN, buildings Dept. court documents, etc. to prove all of this, it is unfair that he will not rent out my first floor apartment to someone else who is unsuspecting and they will pick up where I left off, living in MISERY and being conned by this SLUMLORD. This needs to be put to an end, WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE? I refuse to give up after all I have went through and I want actions taken IMMEDIATELY, I feel like calling my local news channel-human interest story because this IS OUTRAGEOUS.
EMERGENCY question about the power outage!!! elderly involved?
OK….my uncle’s mother who is in her 70s live upstairs my house…my whole family is in the basement because it’s better and fresh. She just came from long Island, and there is freaking no air up there, and it’s like 110 degrees upstairs, she just turned on her fan that blows hot air, and she said she’s fine, she just said that because she thinks she would bother us, but it’s not true, what do I do??? My mom tried to tell her and she’s too stuborn…my mom just told me ‘she’s not a baby, I told her millions of times to come down and she said no’…..HOW AM I SUPPOSED to sleep tonight, knowing an elderly woman may suffer from heat exhaustion or a heat stroke while i’m sleeping..HOW???
THERE’S HARDLY ANY POWER…THE FRIDGE WON’T WORK, AND THERE IS NO AC UP THERE…IF WE PUT IT FOR HER IT WON’T WORK
Equipment in my garage. Should I be worried about the temperature dropping below freezing?
Here on Long Island, NY, I’m concerned about equipment stored in my garage- compressor, pressure washer and mosquito magnet. It’s my first year here, should I worry about the temperature in my garage dropping below freezing? I don’t think the one car garage is insulated. I just installed a dedicated 20 amp circuit to the garage. It is attached to my house, but only has an exterior entrance. It’s impractical to bring this equipment into the basement. Any advice?
Things to Know About Basement Remodeling
With smaller living units most common in New York City, a universal issue faced by almost every homeowner is the need for more space. The continuous housing crunch and never-ending influx of people into the Big Apple is making things worse for homeowners. When it comes to your most space-efficient way of adding to the living space of the family, nothing beats undertaking basement remodeling. So whether you are in Long Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, or Staten Island; it pays to know everything about basement remodeling before undertaking the project. Basement remodeling is never an easy task. So to avoid falling into the home improvement pitfalls here are the keys to a successful home improvement project: . Ideas from where you would work around to achieve the basement finish that complements the lifestyle and existing needs of the household. . Establish a realistic budget and timeline. . A plan and not just any plan, but a well-detailed one. The plan should be comprised of a layout that creates the most functional way to make use of the space, a design that brings out the most appeal in the finish but still complementing the overall design of the home, and building codes that should be met. . Hiring a qualified general contractor would be the best way to go through this project. A basement remodeling project involves a lot of processes which may be complex to the layman. Plumbing, electrical wiring, waterproofing, insulation and a whole lot more are involved. With a general contractor, you would save yourself from all the hassles of screening contractors again and again for one task to another. Sure a home addition can be another option. But a basement remodeling project has some advantages over a home addition. + It affords homeowners a good cutback on project budget and a shorter timeframe. With remodeling your basement, the structural foundations are already there: the walls, ceiling, and flooring. A home addition on the other hand would still require demolition of an area where the addition would be extended and construction of new foundations. . + The typical nature of a basement offers more privacy and the earth surrounding it makes it naturally warm during winter months and cooler when summer heat strikes. The earth also makes up for great soundproofing. + The ready access to plumbing, electricity and other such amenities makes adding an additional bath or kitchenette so much easier. This added project, aside from the basement remodeling finish would surely boost your home’s value and bring improvement in the family’s quality of living. These given benefits though, entail some challenges when it comes to designing the basement. These challenges also make the role of your general contractor all the more important. When basement remodeling, one has the option of relocating the ductworks, HVAC systems, and support columns. But this option can be very expensive. With expertise, experience and a good amount of creativity; working with and around these challenges is possible. Another very important thing to address before finishing the basement is its water and moisture problems. Waterproofing makes the project result of higher quality and last longer than expected.
